The Morning-After Pill Is Used to Prevent Pregnancy
The morning-after pill, also known as “Plan B” or “Plan B One-Step,” is a form of emergency contraception.
Most versions contain levonorgestrel, a hormone that works mainly by delaying or preventing ovulation. If an egg is not released, fertilization cannot occur.
The morning-after pill does not end an established pregnancy. It is intended to reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.
It works best when taken as soon as possible after sex; effectiveness decreases as more time passes.
Possible side effects can include nausea, fatigue, headache, breast tenderness, dizziness, or changes to your next period.
The Abortion Pill Is Used After Pregnancy Has Begun
The abortion pill, also called medical abortion, is used to end an existing pregnancy. It is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation.
It usually involves two drugs. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, the hormone needed to continue the pregnancy. Misoprostol is taken later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
Cramping and bleeding will occur. Other possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, and headache.
Potential risks include heavy bleeding, infection, and incomplete abortion (which is when parts of the pregnancy remain in your uterus).
