Why You Can’t Test Right Away
Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin, also known as hCG. However, this hormone isn’t produced immediately after sex.
First, fertilization must occur. Then the fertilized egg must travel to the uterus and implant into the uterine lining. Only after implantation does your body begin producing enough hCG for a pregnancy test to detect.
If you test too early, you’ll receive a false-negative result. This means you’re pregnant, but there is not enough hCG in your body to be detectable.
The Best Time to Take a Test
If your menstrual cycles are fairly regular, testing a day or two after your missed period usually provides the most reliable answer.
If your periods are irregular, waiting about two to three weeks after sex often gives hCG enough time to reach detectable levels.
If you test early and receive a negative result but your period still doesn’t begin, repeat the test after several days.
A Few Things Can Affect Accuracy
Small details can influence your results. For the best chance of an accurate test:

- Check that the test hasn’t expired.
