What is progesterone? How do progesterone and pregnancy go together? How and where is progesterone made? Those are questions you might ask yourself if you think you might be pregnant and begin doing some research on your own. Fortunately for you, we have all those answers and more right here!

What is progesterone?

Simply, progesterone is a natural hormone a female’s body produces. Specifically, it supports menstruation and helps the body to maintain a pregnancy in its early stages.

Progesterone and Pregnancy

Progesterone and pregnancy go hand-in-hand. It is a critical part of pregnancy as it’s first job is to thicken the lining of the uterus so a fertilized egg can implant. Once an egg implants, it can grow from an egg, to an embryo, to a fetus. With each day that passes, your body increases the amount of progesterone it makes.

That high level of progesterone will keep you from ovulating and releasing another egg, will stop the uterus from contracting prematurely, and finally will help tell the body get ready for breastfeeding.

how is progesterone made?

Progesterone is made in a small, temporary cluster of cells called the corpus luteum. This little cluster pops up after ovulation when the egg is released. If you do not get pregnant that cycle, the corpus luteum will disappear until the next time you ovulate.

Progesterone is also made in the placenta (during pregnancy) and your adrenal glands.

Progesterone and the Abortion pill

The first abortion pill you take decreases and eventually cuts off the growth hormone progesterone to your pregnancy.

progesterone and the abortion pill reversal

If you take the first abortion pill (but not the second one yet) and regret it, a doctor can try to reverse it by prescribing a huge amount of the body’s natural hormone progesterone to help your body jumpstart the pregnancy again. If you are interested in learning more about that, click here.
