How do I tell my family I’m pregnant? If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, the thought of talking to your family can feel scary. Their reactions might be a mixture of confusion, overwhelm, sadness, and anger, unfortunately. That unpredictability can make telling them feel daunting and it might be tempting to not tell them at all.
However, as impossible as it might feel, it is really important that you tell them. Why? Because the reality is that even if you think you can keep your abortion a secret forever, that’s not how it ever works out. If at all possible, it’s important to communicate with someone safe in your family who you can trust to process with you. No matter which option you choose, you’re going to need support. Therefore, we recommend being honest and utilizing the tips below to make it a smoother conversation when the time does come.
Meet somewhere neutral
If you are nervous that the conversation could get very emotional, we recommend meeting in a public location. Being in a setting where others are present naturally forces people to “be on their best behavior” and limits the amount of emotional outbursts.
Bring a trusted friend
Like meeting in a public place, bringing someone along with you can help to keep emotions in check if you plan to receive negative feedback on the news of your accidental pregnancy. It also provides another witness to the conversation for accountability sake.
Gather information
When a hard conversation about your pregnancy needs to be had, it’s best practice to have actual data. That’s why we recommend coming in for an ultrasound and/or a pre-abortion screening if you’re thinking abortion might be an option. While in our office, our registered nurses will talk you through any questions you might have about the abortion pill, give you an ultrasound to empower you with facts about gestational age, placement, and viability. They will also give you an STI test (if your pregnancy test is positive) to protect you from Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, and walk you through your options, if you choose.
